Weekly News Blast: It’s that time of year again – no, not just the holidays, but time to renew your dog license. Contact Treasurer Greg Hakala at treasurer@townofgrant-portage.wi.gov. or give him a call at 715-697-3901. The Town of Grant ranked #1 in Portage County for dog-licensing in 2024, thanks to our responsible dog-owners. Thank you! Let’s keep up our incredible record and show all the other municipalities how it’s done.   Our public works crew was busy brushing along our road rights of way this week. They have been doing a very nice job. This is a good time to remind everyone that now through February is a great time to prune or cut oaks without the risk of oak wilt infection. Oak wilt is an invasive fungal disease deadly to all Wisconsin oak species. One of the ways it spreads is by sap-feeding beetles that carry spores from infected trees to fresh wounds of healthy trees. Oak wilt is very expensive to treat, but prevention is effective and much less costly. One of the best ways to help protect oaks is to prune or cut in the winter. Have a very happy and safe New Year, Sharon

Weekly News Blast

A couple residents called this week inquiring about a “Good Neighbor Agreement” being offered by a representative from Vista Sands Solar. According to the callers they were being offered a five-figure sum in exchange for non-disclosure, access to their bank account and Social Security number so that the funds could be directly deposited and reported to the IRS. They asked if this was a scam or a real thing.

Well, it’s a real thing. But it’s up to the individual to decide whether they want to sign. I recommended to the callers that they have an attorney review the document, talk to our town assessor about real or potential loss of their property value due to the project’s proximity, and contact other municipal leaders/residents who have been through this before. We’re new at this game. And, like we’ve said many times, any utility solar project 100 megawatts or larger is outside of local municipalities to decide. The WI Public Service Commission, made of three members, approved this project. We don’t know if it’s “for better or worse” for our community – time will tell…

If you live in the Mertz Subdivision (that’s the one just south of Grant Elementary School) please join us on Wednesday September 24th for an informational meeting regarding proposed road reconstructions. The meeting will begin at 6:00pm.
